Hike/Ski Tamarack Nature Center. The day after Thanksgiving...skip the mall and join us for some fresh air and exercise at this beautiful nature center just 20 minutes north of St. Paul. Meet at 11am at the visitor center for a one to two-hour hike. Well X/C ski if trails are groomed (Minnesota ski pass required). No entrance fee and free parking. Unfortunately, no dogs allowed. Camping at Itasca State Park. Eat Thanksgiving leftovers, bike, hike, ski during the day. Camp out and watch the Aurora Borealis which will be at the peak of its 11-year cycle. More goofing off the next day. Might stay until Sunday, depending on the weather/sentiment. Dogs welcome.

Broomball. Beginning Sunday Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. (on dirt until we get ice). Located one block south of County Road B on Lexington Avenue in St. Paul. Hopefully every other Sunday it is highly encouraged to sign up for the broomball e-group to keep up on potentially shifting dates and locations. Brooms provided. Soft soled shoes recommended and protective equipment highly encouraged (helmet, shin pads, knee pads). Lots of fun required!

11/1 11/3 ANNUAL HALLOWEEN TRAIL CLEARING TRIP
Trail Clearing on the Border Route Trail. Staying at Hestons Resort on Gunflint Lake next to the Gunflint Section of the Border Route Trail. Excellent food and lodging plus the best sauna on the lake. The sections that well be doing maintenance on will include the Border Route from the High Cliffs at the west end of Gunflint Lake to Bridal Falls on the east end. If we have enough people, well also do a sweep of the Bryce Breon Trail along the shore of Loon Lake. On Saturday evening well enjoy the hospitality of Barb and Greg Gegas, the owners of Hestons and personal friends of many of us. Barb is famous for the food that she prepares for this annual trip. Biking See Fall Colors. Biking 40+ miles/day (shorter routes also planned) to catch the peak colors. Ride Saturday near Plum City and Sunday between Red Wing and River Falls. Camping Friday and Saturday nights at Nugget Lake State Park near Plum City, WI. For those who think its too cold for camping, you can stay at a motel or B&B nearby.

Six-Day BWCAW Canoe Trip. We will travel into a remote part of the BWCAW, the Cross River. There will be very few mosquitoes and very few people. The nights will be cool and the days warm and filled with fall colors. There will be lakes and narrow river channels with beaver dams and the choice of the best campsites. Estimated cost: $75 $100. Maggie is interested in renting the log home at the National Forest Lodge this weekend as well and is looking for others who may be interested. The cost is $175.00 per person for the weekend which includes food (they do all the cooking and cleaning. The meals provided are from Friday night dinner through Sunday lunch. Its a beautiful home that sleeps ~8 people. The Superior Hiking Trail is nearby and there is also canoeing/kayaking on the Stoney river. Contact Maggie ASAP if interested.

Trail Maintenance on the Border Route Trail. Pigeon River section. Leave Friday evening, returning late Sunday night. Camping at Otter Lake, doing ?? between the Swamp River and the Otter Lake junctions. Good overlooks above the Pigeon River Valley. Sea-kayaking on the Wisconsin River. Leave Friday evening, return Sunday night. Paddle 20 25 miles over the weekend, camping on a backcountry site Saturday night. Weve paddled this river valley other years and these portions of the river were scenic! There are usually a lot of sand bars to camp on. There is an extra kayak if you need one.

Keep the Celebration Going! Join newlyweds Terri and Mike for a picnic at Basset Creek Park in Crystal from 12pm to 3pm. Bring your whole family for volleyball, tennis, bocce ball, soccer, or softball. Kids will enjoy the playground.

Mountain Biking / Whitewater Kayaking / Hiking in Wisconsin. Leave early Saturday morning, set up camp, and go mountain biking on CAMBA trails in Wisconsin. Sunday morning we will drive to Brule to go kayaking. Ten kayaks have been reserved if more than 10 people want to go kayaking, you can make your own arrangements or go biking or hiking on Sunday instead. Monday we will be biking and/or hiking again. We will be camping at Two Lakes, a National Forest campground on a Lake Owen (no showers). For dinner, we will plan to get groceries in town and grill if time permits, otherwise go to a local bar to eat. Carpooling and tent sharing are a MUST, as there will be limited space. Backpack the Sierra High Route in Kings Canyon National Park. The Sierra High Route is the classic cross-country route through the high Sierras. We will do the section from Mather Pass to Kings Canyon. Most of the time we will be off-trail at elevations above 10000'. This is a difficult route: quite a bit harder and more dangerous than a typical backpacking trip. Previous backpacking experience and excellent physical conditioning are required.

Bike St. Paul. Well take the same 31-mile route as the St. Paul Bike Classic but you you get to keep your $25! This route features the highlights of St. Paul everything from parks and lakes to several stunning views of the Mississippi River and even a little-known trail through historic Swede Hollow. Meet at 9:45am at the parking lot off of Lexington Avenue, one block north of Horton and just south of the Como Lake pavilion. Please be ready to ride at 10:00. Basic Orienteering Skills Course. Learn basic compass and topographic map-reading skills during the short program presented by the Minnesota Orienteering Club at the meeting on July 23. If there are enough people interested in learning more and practicing those skills, there will be an outing on Thursday, July 25 at Lake Elmo. Minimum Trip size: 10. Day hike at Afton State Park. Meet at 10:30am in the parking lot of Afton State Park (follow the park road to its very end) or at the REI in Roseville at 9am for carpooling. Its a beautiful park with a fair amount of hills, prairie, woods, and nice overlooks of the St. Croix River (lake). I plan to hike about 10km (~6 1/2 miles, 3 - 4 hours). Weekend Canoeing on the North Fork of the Flambeau River. Leave Friday evening at 6pm and camp in Flambeau Forest. Paddle about 22 miles and camp at a backcountry site. This is supposed to be a very scenic forest.

Mountain Biking at Afton Alps. Meet at 10am at the golf course parking lot at Afton Alps Recreation Area. Afton has trails for various skill levels, but at least some mountain biking experience is recommended. The course snakes its way up and down the ski slopes and in and out of the woods. There are trails that they call citizen and more difficult loops marked as expert, but all the trails are challenging with steep hills and sharp turns. Each rider is expected to bike at a speed within his or her skill level. Helmets are not only required it would be insane not to wear one. Estimated cost: $7.00.

Willow River State Park Day Hiking/Biking. Its a beautiful park with miles of hiking trails. Bring a picnic lunch and explore. The waterfalls are magical you can walk through and sit under the rushing water. Its an outstanding place just 20 minutes from St. Paul. Meet at 10am at the parking lot by the swimming area. Or, if you would like to carpool, meet at REI in Roseville at 9am. Estimated cost: $10 per car for a park pass or $30 annual Wisconsin Parks pass. Nature Hike in Pennington Bog. Pennington Bog is a virtually undisturbed tract of coniferous forest, providing critical habitat for a diverse array of plant species. A wide assortment of beautiful and unusual plant species grows beneath a dense canopy of white cedar, balsam fir, and black spruce. The forest floor can be easily damaged from visitor use, given the wet nature of the forest community. Also, abundance of orchids. Pennington Bog is a Scientific and Natural Area that requires a permit (limited number issued) from the DNR. Plant photographers frequent the Bog. It is near Bemidji in Beltrami County. Where we stay and what other activities will be decided by the people on the trip. Max trip size: 5.

and a game of horseshoes! Weve reserved the horse camp again at Elm Creek Park in Maple Grove for Saturday night so dont worry about that long drive home! Bring something for the grill and something to share. Theres a grocery store and a meat market nearby. BWCAW-type Canoeing Near Ely. Leave Friday evening after work and return Sunday night. This is a short two-day route just outside of the BWCAW and does not require a permit or reservation fees. Route starts at Bass Lake and exits at Fenski Lake.

Day Hike and Camp at Jay Cooke State Park. The park has unique geology and should still have spring wildflowers. Drive up Friday evening or Saturday morning, hike round the park on Saturday, or sit in the sunshine. Saturday night BBQ and watch the stars. Sunday depart Jay Cooke State Park and slip across the border to Wisconsin on the way home and see some BIG waterfalls in Amnicon Falls State Park or a 165 ft fall in Pattison State Park (either park is only 13 miles from Superior and a short hike). Biking on Cannon Falls Trail. Meet at Park-n-Ride at 9:30am or at the trailhead at 11am. Take Highway 52 South to Exit 280 into Cannon Falls (one hour south of Minneapolis). We will have a late lunch in Red Wing. If it rains, this trip will be rescheduled. Cost: $2 trail fee, plus lunch money. HELMETS ARE REQUIRED.

Bike on the LRT North/LRT South Loop. 37-mile loop, 30 miles on crushed limestone, 7 miles on paved road. Leisurely pace with a stop about half way for lunch at Dairy Queen. The limestone trails are flat, the paved road has some hills. Either a mountain bike or a hybrid bike will work fine on these trails. Meet at 10am at the parking lot at 8th Avenue and Excelsior Boulevard in Hopkins. Bring money for lunch or bring your own lunch/snacks.

Beginner BWCAW Canoe Trip. Learn the basic of canoeing in the beautiful Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Prior to the trip, we will go out to one of the local lakes and practice some basic portaging techniques, canoeing, and packing a Duluth pack. Mountain Biking and/or Inline Skating at Elm Creek Park. We plan to mountain bike but there are paved trails as well if youd rather skate (or bike on pavement). Beginners welcome, the trails are pretty flat and wide with some single track as well. The Father Hennepin Festival is going on this weekend, so afterward, join us to check out the events there and BBQ at our house afterward (pot-luck). Meet at 11am in the Northwest corner of the Champlin movie theater parking lot on 114th Avenue North and Highway 169.

Canoeing the Cloquet River. Indian Lake to Island Lake (35 miles). Canoe camping on a relatively remote, scenic, wildlife rich section of the Cloquet. Last year we saw no other canoes on the river in three days. The river runs through an assortment of habitats giving excellent and varied scenery. Basic river canoeing and wilderness camping skills are needed. This section has eight named Class I and II rapids, all runnable but with well marked DNR maintained portages for those who prefer to walk. The route has several DNR canoe campsites and, depending on water levels, lots of sandbars that are suitable for camping. Aluminum canoes are not recommended unless you intend to portage all the rapids.
