12/31 SOCIAL EVENT
New Years Eve Party. For all you people who cant or are not going out of town cross-country skiing, winter camping somewhere in the north woods, or laying on a sandy beach in Mexico soaking up some warm sunny rays, come and join us and cheer in the new year. For those of you who still wish to winter camp there is a small back yard and if you get too cold our wood burning stove will be stoked up so you can come in and warm up. For the party, bring yourself, of course, and a food item to share and a beverage of your choice for yourself. For directions e-mail or call. Party starts at 8:00 pm

Winter Camping in the BWCA. Three days of winter camping. Ski in 34 miles and set up a base camp, then do day trips from theret. Expect cold temperatures. Meet at at 6am Friday, returning 6pm Sunday.

Winter Camping. Winter camping in the Porcupine Mountains. There should be good lake effect snow for lots of fun. Dinners will be group meals, breakfast and lunch are on your own. We will be skiing and snowshoeing the interior of the park. It looks like there should be some fun hills to play on. Might be good snow to try snow shelters. Estimated cost: $75. Deposit: $50. Wednesday Night Ice Skating. The skating rink is finally open! Meet 7pm at Centennial Lakes Park in Edina. There is a great warming house with two fireplaces and a snack bar. Skate rental is available for $4, skating itself is free. The park is located a few blocks south of Southdale at 7499 France Avenue S. (by Chuck E. Cheese) and is open until 9:30pm. Look for Heidi in a black pea coat with red hat, gloves, and scarf.

Day Hike/Movie Outing Part 2. Meet 1pm at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. Well meet on the Brooklyn Park side, or the west side of the river. Well hike for approximately 2 hours, then go to a movie at Regal Theater in Brooklyn Center. (Off of Hwy 252 and 694). Winter Camping. This will be a one-night winter camping trip for beginners. We will be staying a Wild River State Park. Dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday will be included. Since it may get cold, proper winter camping gear is a must. The cage does have some of these items that can be checked out. A state park sticker is required or you will need to pay the park entrance fee on your own. Hopefully there will be snow so we can cross country ski, snowshoe, etc. Estimated cost: $12-$15 per person. Max trip size: 12.

12/4 DAY TRIP & SOCIAL EVENT
Day Hike/Movie Outing. Meet at 1:30pm at Eastman Nature Center in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Maple Grove. Well hike 4+ miles, rain or shine (or snow!). If we do get deep enough snow, snow shoe rental is available at the Nature Center. Bring water and a snack. After the hike, well go to the nearby Mann Champlin 14 movie theater. Movie and exact movie showtime to be determined as we get closer to the hike date. Im open to suggestions as to which movie to see, please e-mail me with your choices. We can also go out to eat afterwards, if anyone is interested.

Wildlife Photography/Hiking. Wildlife Photography/Hiking in Custer State Park, South Dakota, and Mt. Rushmore area. Big horn sheep rut will be underway, as well as access to mountain goats in prime winter coats. Photography will be my priority, but if you want to hike or ?, thats okay. Motel at night. Weather can be warm (50) or cold, wet/snowy, with snow on ground, or dry and no snow. Hiking can be difficult due to weather conditions. Meet at 6pm Wednesday (location TBD), returning 8pm Sunday. Estimated cost: $150 (based on two participants, less if more people). Deposit: $75. Max trip size: 4.

11/13 DAY TRIP & SOCIAL EVENT
Urban Hike and Potluck Dinner/Party. For those who wish to hike before the potluck dinner/party we will start the hike at 4pm. and hike about 5 miles. Part of the hike will be around a south Minneapolis lake. At 6pm. the potluck dinner/party will begin. Bring a food dish or food item and a beverage of your choice. 11/3 WEDNESDAY NIGHT HIKE
Hiking at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington. Meet at 7pm in the visitor center at Hyland Park. Well be hiking on lighted trails for a change, so no flashlights needed. Hike until approximately 8:30 (bring rain gear if necessary), and get together for socializing afterwards. This is our last scheduled hike for the season, so let's make it a good one!
Directions: Take Hwy 100 South. Just past 494, turn right on 84th St. Follow 84th St. past the ski jump. 84th will turn into East Bush Lake Road near the ski jump. Follow East Bush Lake Road, past Richardson Nature Center, to the park entrance on your left (a couple of miles from the ski jump). Follow the entrance road to the visitor center parking lot.

10/29 10/31 ANNUAL HALLOWEEN TRIP
HalloweenTrail Maintenance & Party. Border Route Trail maintenance trip to Hestons Resort located next to the BWCAW on Gunflint Lake. Bring a costume for the Saturday evening after dinner party at the lodge. Great company, excellent food, incredible scenery, the best sauna on the lake and the marvelous hospitality provided by the folks at Hestonsall for a price that cant be beat. Plus you get to feel really good because youve made a contribution to the well being of the Border Route. Prior experience not required. We provide OJT for everything but the chain saws for which you USFS certification. If people are interested, we may have a three-day option leaving Thursday evening. John will accept deposits at Tuesday meetings. Meet at Roseville REI at 6:15pm, returning 10:30pm. Estimated cost: $55. Deposit: $55. Max trip size: 20.

Apple Orchard Run or Walk. This beautiful five-mile course is on the trails through the apple orchard, strawberry fields and pumpkin patch. Read more at www.pinetreeappleorchard.com. Be sure to register before October 17th. Click here for an entry form. After the run/walk, we can check out the pumpkin patch, watch how they sort apple, drink apple cider, eat apple pie, and shop for apple goodies at the apple orchard pumpkin patch country store. Meet at McDonalds (intersection of HWY 95 & 61) in White Bear Lake at 8am, returning 2pm. Estimated cost: $18.

Day Hike Hiking at Whitewater State Park. Hike Coyote Point, Dakota, and Chimney Rock trails. These three trails offer 7 miles of the prettiest hiking in the park. They include many blufftop overlooks which should be great for viewing the fall colors. Meet at REI in Bloomington (494 and Lyndale) at 9am for carpooling. Returning 67pm. Bring a lunch for along the trail, water, snacks and rain gear. Well hike rain or shine. Trip cost is your share of the gas.

Brunch Bike Ride. A 50-mile fall color tour up and down hills south of Menomonie, WI. After brunch at The Creamery well bike on the flat Red Cedar trail. Meet at 1224 Blair Ave. St Paul (Midway) at 8am to carpool, returning at 6pm. Estimated cost: $20 ($15.50 for brunch and $4 trail fee). Max trip size: 25.

Cool Weather Backbacking in BWCAW. Explore northern Minnesotas deep woods, the rocky shorelines of remote lakes. We will backpack the Pow Wow Trail that runs deep into the southern portion of the BWCA. The trail is about a 32 mile loop. Youll need to have cool weather backpacking experience. Max trip size: 4.

Weekend Biking Trip: Three Driftless Heroines Fall Color Bike Tour. We will bike on Saturday in Wisconsin to Laura Ingalls Wilders Little House. Short trip is 30 miles and long trip is 50. On the 50-mile ride we will also bike near Maiden Rock. Both routes are hilly. On Sunday options are to do hilly 50 miles or bike the flat Red Cedar Trail about 30 miles or hike 7 miles. We will camp Friday and Saturday nights in the Nugget Lake Campground. Meet at 1224 Blair Ave., St. Paul at after 3pm on Friday, returning before 6pm on Sunday. Estimated cost: $30.

Hiking at Fort Snelling State Park. Meet in the interpretive center parking lot at 7pm. We will hike the 3.5 mile Pike Island loop that goes through the woods and follows along the river. Mountain Biking at Elm Creek Park Reserve. Meet in the northwest corner of the parking lot of the Champlin Cinema at 5:30pm. From there we will bike to Elm Creek Park Reserve and explore the trails. HELMETS REQUIRED!
Champlin Cinema is located at 11500 Theatre Drive N. Take 169 north to 117th Avenue (youll pass the theater), and turn left at the stoplight. Turn left on Theater Drive and youll see us in the parking lot. Afterward we will go to Broadway Pizza for refreshments. | map |

Trail Clearing and Hiking. Trail Clearing on the Border Route Trail north of Clearwater Lake along Canadian Border. This will be a non-mechanized trip, using hand saws and loppers. There will be hiking in free time. Short canoe across Clearwater Lake on Friday morning, camping on north shore. Trail clearing/hiking Friday and Saturday, return Sunday. BWCA Canoeing Trip. This is a five-day, four-night canoe trip into the northwest section of the BWCA. We will enter the wilderness at the North Moose River entry point, #16. We will drive up either Tuesday night, or VERY EARLY Wednesday morning, and return Sunday evening. Meeting place TBA, returning before 10pm on Sunday. Estimated cost: $50$75. Deposit: $50. Max trip size: 6.
This is an intermediate level trip, as we will traverse 89 portages over 150 rods, as well as a number of shorter portages. BWCA beginners are welcome, as long as they understand this, and are willing to get a little tired on some days. Some camping experience would be helpful. If youve never been the BWCA at this time of year, youre really missing out. No bugs, fewer people, and, with little luck, some fall colors.

Backpacking on the Border Route Trail. We will drive to Grand Marais on Wednesday after work, stopping for dinner on the way. We will stay in a hotel Wednesday night. Thursday morning we will have breakfast in town, then pick up our permits, and drive to the trailhead. The two groups will be starting at different ends of the trail so we will drive the other groups cars to the trailhead. We will be hiking about 7 to 9 miles a day. Toms group will be hiking in on the Daniels Lake Trail and ending at the BWCA border on McFarland lake, Johns will do the reverse (with an option to do more). This section has a lot of nice overlooks for rest breaks and photos. I would like everyone to either take photos or write down their thoughts for posting on the BRT web page. Some of this trail has not been cleared in the last two years so we may hit some deadfall. Meet at REI Roseville at 6:30pm, returning 9pm

9/22 WEDNESDAY NIGHT HIKE
Summit Ave/Mississippi River Hike. Join us on the first day of fall for a hike along the river. Meet at 7pm in the parking lot at the West end of Summit Avenue (free parking). If the lot is full, parking is available along Summit Ave. Well hike above the river across the Marshall Ave bridge to the West side of the river, then back around the Ford Parkway bridge to complete the loop back to the parking lot. This loop will take approx. two hours. We hike rain or shine. Bring rain gear and a flashlight. Socializing afterward for those interested.

Canoe / Kayak Trip on the Rum River. The trip length will be about 15 miles. If you do not have a canoe you can check one out from the cage. They also have paddles, life jackets, and canoe carrier racks and tie downs in the cage. Bring a lunch, beverages, and clothing for varied weather conditions. If you need a canoe partner let us know and we will try to match people and available spaces in canoes.

Mountain Biking at Lebanon Hills. Mountain biking just as good as Moab! (ok, well its pretty good though). Join us for a ride on the singletrack at Lebanon Hills Regional Park, including a spin through the very challenging obstacle course. Several route options are available so all speed/ability/stamina levels will have a good time. Lunch afterwards at a nearby restaurant. Meet at Lebanon HIlls Park (Trailhead at Johnnycake Ridge Road) at 10am.

Trail Clearing Border Route Trail. BWCA Trail Clearing on Border Route Trail using Hand tools Staying at Clearwater Lake EAST Campsite. Meet at REI Roseville about 6:30 pm Friday night to carpool up to BWCA. We will stop for Supper in Duluth or Two Harbors (not included in trip cost). Friday night we will stay at the Bearskin Ranger Cabin. Saturday morning after breakfast we will canoe to the campsite, set up camp then start work on the trail to the East, working up to teh top of the ridge to a nice overlook. Sunday we will spend the day on the trail working to the East clearing trees and brush. Monday we will work on the trail near camp or explore the area until 10am, then canoe back to Clearwater Lodge. On the drive home, we can stop off in Grand Marais at the pool for a shower and hot tub. We will stop in Duluth for dinner (not included in the trip cost) then drive back to REI about 9pm on Monday. All

Hiking along the Minnesota River Bottoms in Bloomington. Meet in the trailhead parking lot at 7pm. We'll hike east this time towards the airport; until approx 8:30pm. We hike rain or shine. Bring a flashlight, rain gear, bug dope, water, etc. After the hike, socializing nearby for those who are interested.
Directions: Take 35W south and exit at 106th St. Turn left, and pass under the freeway. Go 2 blocks to the 3 way stop at Lyndale AvE. Turn right. Follow Lyndale until it ends in the trailhead parking lot.

Backpacking Sierra Nevada High Route. Fly to Reno 9/14. Take shuttle 200 miles south to Bishop. Stay in Bishop overnight. 9/15 onwards, off trail trek North to Mammoth at altitudes of between 9,000 and 12,000 ft. 9/28 Shuttle to Reno. Catch plane home. Total distance: 50 miles off trail. Day Trip and/or Camping. The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is in Shakopee along Hwy. 169. The Minnesota Valley SRA (State Park) is about 10 miles south of the festival. We have the group site reserved for Friday and Saturday night. Well plan to visit the festival (9am7pm) on Saturday. Folks can decide if they want to camp both nights, one night, or just meet to go to the fair. With a group discount we can get tickets for $18, which includes a food book worth $6. Trail Maintenance on the Border Route. This trip will be doing maintenance on the Gunflint section of the Border Route Trail. On Saturday, well take a boat to the eastern end of the lake and take care of the pieces on either side of Bridal Falls. On Sunday well reopen the trail along the ridge overlooking the Cross Riverthe last piece of the 99 Big Blow damage yet to be cleared. Lodging will be provided by Hestons, the resort with the best sauna on Gunflint Lake. Well be using mechanized equipment. OJT available for swampers and brushcutters, USFS certification required for sawyers. Excellent food, scenery, and company. Meet at Roseville REI at 6:15pm, returning 11:00pm. Estimated cost: $55. 9/9 9/12 SORRY, THIS TRIP IS FULL
Trail clearing on the Border Route Trail. We will drive up Thursday night and stay in a bunkhouse, Friday morning we will canoe about two miles across Clearwater Lake to the campsite and setup camp. Friday afternoon and Saturday we will work on the trail. Sunday morning will be free time (unless the weather tells us to get off the lake), we will canoe back to the cars either before or just after lunch. At the cars we will be able to get a shower for $4 (not included in the trip cost) then drive back to REI. There will be a dinner on the way up and on the way back that we will purchase (again not included in the trip costs). All food will be provided except trail snacks (you will need them) and drinks. We will be in the BWCAW so no bottles or cans. Meet at REI Roseville at 6:30pm on Thursday, returning 9pm Sunday. Estimated cost: $65. Deposit: $50. Max trip size: 9.

Hiking & Camping. Fly to Phoenix and then rent a car. Stay at hostels or camp. Hiking in Sedona, visit Flagstaff, hike at Canyon de Chelley, and hike at Navaho National Monument. Directions: From 494 & Hwy 55, go west on Hwy 55. Turn left on Cty Rd 24, and go west on Cty Rd 24 for approx 8 miles. The admin office and trailhead parking lot will be on your right, just past Cty Rd 201 (Parkview Dr). If you get to Cty Rd 19, you've gone too far.

Sailing in the Apostle Islands. Stay in marina Friday night, anchor out in the islands Saturday and Sunday. Explore seacaves, awesome beaches, lighthouses, hiking trails. Possibility of bringing a kayak or two if anyone has smaller ones they can get up there. No experience required. Includes food and carpool costs. Meet at 6 pm, location TBD. Returning 8pm. BWCAW Canoe Trip. This trip includes 10 days and 9 nights. The trip begins on Friday by driving to Ely to pick up permit and view the required video on the BWCA and then camping at Fall Lake. Entry on Saturday is on Mudro Lake (#23 entry), north of Ely (see McKenzi Map 11. Jackfish, Beartrap). The trip includes 11 portages, most are short but includes one of 328 rods. The route includes canoeing to Thursday and Friday Bays on Crooked Lake via Horse Lake and Horse River. Return is from Friday Bay to Fourtown Lake and ending at Mudro Lake with exit on Sunday, 9/5 (day before Labor Day). There will be lots of time for fishing plus time set aside for viewing pictographs and waterfalls. Several layover days will allow for exploring, relaxing or concentrated fishing. Kayaking, Bicycling and Swimming on Madeline Island. Spend a long weekend on Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands off the Bayfield Peninsula in Wisconsin. Stay in the rustic guesthouse of Big Bay State Park, seven miles from the ferry dock on a lagoon near its outlet to Lake Superior. Recreation: Kayak on the lagoon or around the island, bicycle to the village of La Pointe and around the island. Swim in the lagoon or from the beach of Big Bay State Park. Trip cost: About $35, which includes breakfasts, lunches, and accommodations. Sleeping is on the floor of the guesthouse, which has no beds or indoor plumbing but does have a full kitchen and electricity. Showers are in the state park, 2.5 miles away via the Lagoon Ridge Trail, closer by kayak.
Extra costs include ferry transportation from Bayfield ($8.50 round-trip, $12.50 with bicycle, $28 with car) and dinners. Optional costs include kayak rental ($20$30 per day), admission to the Madeline Island Historical Museum in La Pointe ($5.50), or a performance at Big Top Chautauqua south of Bayfield ($12$55).

Join us this Sunday for hiking at Banning State Park. We'll hike a portion of the 17 miles of trails that follow along the Kettle River. We can check out the whitewater action on the river from the sandstone cliffs. The Star Tribune named the Banning trails Some of the loveliest hiking trails in Minnesota. Bring a lunch for along the trail, water, sunscreen, bug dope, rain gear and money for expenses.

Join us at Elm Creek Park Reserve for (a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Jim Bakers 30th Birthday), biking, hiking, inline skating, swimming, picnic, etc. If youre willing to make the trek all the way to the NW burbs to this terrific park in Maple Grove, meet at the recreation area near the beach and well start there. Elm Creek Park Reserve has 19+ miles of paved trails that also connect to Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park via the North Hennepin Trail Corridor (5.6 miles). These trails are all in EXCELLENT condition for biking and inline skating, most have been recently repaved. There are also over 14 miles of turf hiking trails and 4 miles of mountain biking trails. Pets are allowed on designated trails only (5.4 miles). Dont forget swimwear! Theres a man-made, chlorinated, and filtered swimming pond with sand beach at the area well be picnicking. Canoe Trip to Lake of the Woods. Are you tired of the same old places in the BWCA and looking for some new scenery? Come and explore the Ontario wilderness of Lake of the Woods. Dont let the big open water of Minnesota scare you. Most of the lake lies in Ontario. However, this is no ordinary lake. Lake of the Woods is 4,500 square miles, has 60,000 miles of shoreline, and includes 14,000 islands. The Ontario portion is prime canoe country.
Our destination is Arrow Lake, one of the lakes most scenic spots. Well launch at the end of the road in Morson, Ontario, paddle 12 miles to Miles Bay, then go up Thompsons Creek. Well have 35 portages (depending on beaver dams), with the longest being about 1/2 a mile. The water level is high this year, so the creek should be easy going. Well spend two days in Arrow Lake and the surrounding lakes exploring, catching our limit of fish, gorging on wild Blueberries, etc. This trip will give you a little bit of everything. Secluded inland lakes, a beautiful creek with waterfalls, bigger open water, great fishing, and the chance to be the only canoe trip within miles. Estimated Cost: $75$95 + transportation. Hiking at Crosby Farm Regional Park. Come join us for our continued exploration of the Mississippi River bottoms at Crosby Farm Regional Park. We will meet at 7pm, hike rain or shine for approx. 1.5 hours, then get together for socializing (most likely ice cream) afterwards. When I checked the park out this last weekend, the mosquitoes were REALLY bad, so don't forget your bug spray!
Directions: From downtown St. Paul or I-35E north, take Shepard Road west/southwest to Crosby Road. From Minneapolis, come south on West Mississippi River Boulevard. Cross the river on Ford Bridge. Continue south on East Mississippi River Boulevard. This street ends at the Highway 5 interchange. Continue on the boulevard across the interchange to the light. Turn right onto Crosby Road. From Highway 5 north of I-494 and the airport, exit at Mississippi River Boulevard/Gannon Road. Crosby Road is straight ahead at the light.

Meet at NE corner of Lake Calhoun/Boat rental area/Concession area at 6:15 p.m..Well paddle over to Isles, then through the canal to Cedar Lake, then maybe poke our heads over into Brownie Lake. We plan on leaving the dock 6:30 p.m. so remember; if you are late you will need to paddle really, really fast. Also: July 14th is La Bastille/French Independence Day, so we will go somewhere and have a glass of wine afterward. Boat rental is about $8/hour and they will need to be returned by 8pm. Summit Avenue/Mississippi River Hike. Meet at 7pm in the parking lot at the west end of Summit Avenue (free parking). If the lot is full, parking is available along Summit. Well hike across the Marshall Avenue bridge to the west side of the river, then back around the Ford Parkway bridge to complete the loop back to the parking lot. We can split into two groupsthe more adventurous can hike closer to the river where there are some rather steep and rocky spots. The more leisurely hikers can stick to the flat paths higher up. This loop will take approximately two hours. We hike rain or shine, and get together for socializing afterward for those interested.

After we are all hiked/biked out, well adjorn to the Woods for a potluck BBQ dinner. Well have the grill going, and some outdoor games (including Rovers adventure croquet). Backpacking on SHT. Three day backpacking trip on the Superior Hiking Trail from Beaver Bay to County Road 6 (22.6 miles, 4.5 of them on the last day). Leave on Friday after work and return on Monday night. A more challenging, but scenic, section of the SHT with lots of up and down. Participants bring their own breakfast, lunches and snacks, dinners will be provided. Trip meeting will be held at Ol Mexico after the Rover meeting on June 8. Lightweight Backpacking Gear Group Meeting. The purpose of our Lightweight Backpacking Gear Group is for ultralight/lightweight backpackers to meet and talk gear.
We will pass around our gear, talk about what we currently use, relay our trail experiences with certain brands/models, have a discussion about the technology underlying the performance, and review pros vs cons. After, I would like to present some info on not-already-discussed options that are noteworthy within the lightweight gear community.
First Meeting Topic: Shelters. Meet at 10am on Sunday, June 6 at Fort Snelling State Park (at the beach parking lot).
Directions: Hwy 5 Exit Post Road. Turn south into Fort Snelling State Park. After exactly 1.3 miles beyond the stone gate entry, turn left into the farthest parking lot for the beach (the beach has 7 or 8 driveways leading into its parking lot; turn left at the last one). Biking in Lanesboro Come bike the scenic trails in the bluff country of southeastern Minnesota. We'll bike the Root River and Harmony-Preston Valley State Trails. All levels of riders are welcome. Bike as much or as little of the 60 miles of paved trails as you like. Challenge yourself on the 18 miles of hills and curves at either end, or stick to the 42 miles of easy and flat in the middle. No trail fees required.
Depart 6pm Friday, returning Sunday. Camping Friday and Saturday nights in Lanesboro, adjacent to the bike trail and the river. Bathrooms/showers/water available. Canoe/kayak/tube rental on-site, or bring your own. You provide your own meals for the weekend. Estimated cost $10-15 camping fee + food and transportation. Registration deadline June 2. Roving in the Badlands. Southwestern South Dakota has an great collection of places perfect for hiking, biking or just watching the buffalo roam. The Badlands are truly amazing and surreal in its own right, but 90 miles to the west are Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Black Hills and Jewel & Wind Caves. By day we will spend a lot of time scouring the Badlands and the other places. By night we will observe the stars and planets. We probably wont get in all the sites
but we will try. Well stay at a regular campsite with running water but no shower. Meals will not be provided. Leave mid-afternoon on Friday, returning late Monday evening. Estimated cost: $75$95. Deposit: $12.50. Max trip size: 20. Sign up by May 14.

BWCAW Trail Clearing on Border Route Trail using hand tools. Staying at Gogebic Lake WEST campsite. Please send your registration to Chris L. Meet at REI Roseville about 5:30pm Friday night to carpool up to the BWCAW. We will stop for dinner in Duluth or Two Harbors (not included in the trip cost). Friday night we will stay at the Clearwater Lodge Bunkhouse. Saturday morning after breakfast we will meet with USFS at about 9am for safety talks and tools. We will then be shuttled to the east end of Clearwater Lake and proceed to hike approx. 1.5 miles to the west campsite on Gogebic Lake, set up camp, then start to work on the trail to the east. Most
of this section needs to be brushed, and in the middle of this section (about the middle of West Pike on the top of the hill) there are about 10 trees that need to be removed. Sunday we will proceed east on the trail. Monday we will break camp, hike back to Clearwater Lake, and be shuttled back to Clearwater lodge. On the drive home we can stop off in Grand Marais at the pool for a shower and hot tub. We will stop in Duluth for dinner (not included in the trip cost), then drive back to REI about 9pm. There will be nice overlooks on the trail for breaks and lunches. All meals (except Friday and Monday dinner) are included in the trip cost. Trip cost: $60. Max size: 9.

Wilderness Canoeing. Indian Lake to Island Lake (35 miles). Canoe camping on a relatively remote, scenic, wildlife-rich section of the Cloquet. In the last three years, we have not seen more than one other canoe group on the river in three days. The river runs through an assortment of habitats giving excellent and varied scenery. Basic river canoeing and wilderness camping skills are needed. This section has eight named Class I and II rapids, all runnable but with well-marked DNR maintained portages for those who prefer to walk. The route has several DNR canoe campsites and, depending on water levels, lots of sandbars that are suitable for camping. Aluminum canoes are not recommended unless you intend to portage all the rapids. Meet at Island Lake at 8am, returning 8pm. Estimated cost: $40. Deposit: $20. Max trip size: 10.

Hike in (2 miles) on Crab Lake access trail and camp at Crab Lake. First night in Forest Service Cabin on Bearskin Lake. There are 5 trees down on the east leg of the Crab Lake trail, but it doesn't need to be brushed very much. There is a large tangle of trees on the west leg of the Crab Lake trail, and the west arm is in need of brushing. Located 45 miles directly south of the Twin Cities, this state park is comprised of one of the last remnants of Big Woods vegetation along with rolling hills and valleys. There are 13 miles of hiking trails. We will spend a few hours of hiking various trails of differing intensity. Bring lunch and lots of water. A $7 daily or $25 annual permit is required. We can arrange carpooling from the cities (meet at 10am), or arrange to meet at the park at 11am. Returning ~4pm.

Hiking at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve. With the exception of the trails, this 2,400-acre park reserve in northeast Scott County (near Savage), remains undeveloped. Canoeing on the Cannon River. Starting at the Woolen factory store in Faribault to the small town of Dundas. Length of trip is 13 miles. We will travel through the Cannon River Wilderness Area. Spring Planting. Celebrate spring with a great planting event along the Mississippi River. This project is part of a design to create prairie, oak forest, an interpretive garden and a storm water system for a nearby residential development. River Park is one of the few professionally designed natural parks in the metro area and will help create wildlife habitat along the river, reduce erosion and mitigate storm water impacts. Volunteers will be planting trees, shrubs and some prairie plants at River Park. Coffee and donuts before, picnic after. Advance registration is requiredthis is filling fast, so sign up soon. This would be a great way to get into shape for trail clearing!

Hiking at Afton State Park. In an attempt to get ourselves into shape, were going to don our backpacks and plan to hike 712 miles. Anyone is welcome to join us (with or without backpacks). Meet at 10:45am in the parking lot of Afton State Park (follow the park road to the end). Trails traverse remnant and restored prairies, wind down deep ravines and rise up to the grassy ridgetops and bluffs overlooking the scenic St. Croix River. Wednesday Night Hike at Elm Creek Park Reserve. Meet at 7pm and hike for 1 to 1.5 hours. Elm Creek Park Reserve is located northwest of the Twin Cities, near Maple Grove. Meet at Eastman Nature Center County Road 81 to County Road 121 (past the road to the main park entrance), turn north and go to Elm Creek Road. Turn right and follow the road to the nature center. Mountain Biking at Elm Creek Park Reserve. Meet in the northwest corner of the parking lot of the Champlin Cinema at 6:30pm. From there we will bike to Elm Creek Park Reserve mostly on dirt/grass trails. All levels welcomethese are mostly flat, easy trails. HELMETS REQUIRED!

Trail Clearing Training. Learn basic trail clearing techniques. Wednesday, April 14th OR Thursday, April 15th, 6pm to 8pm (same information covered on both evenings
just plan on attending once). Location: REI in Bloomington, 750 W 79th St, Bloomington, MN 55420, phone (952) 884-4315. Preregistration is NOT required.
First time participants on May Trail clearing trips should plan on attending one of the basic trail clearing training sessions. Topics covered include how to: use tools safely; clear trail to U.S. Forest Service standards, and stay warm, dry, and safe in the woods. Plan to attend training unless you have been on previous trips or have made other arrangements with your trip coordinator. Training sessions are organized and sponsored by the Minnesota Wilderness Trail Alliance. This training is free. Call Mary with questions.

Hiking at Afton State Park. Meet at 1:30pm in the parking lot of Afton State Park (follow the park road to its very end) or at the REI in Roseville at 12pm for carpooling. Its a beautiful park with a fair amount of hills, prairie, woods, and nice overlooks of the St. Croix River (lake). Biking, Pot Luck, Cards/Games. Biking distance will be dependent on participants. If the roads/paths are not clear and we cannot bike, we will hike instead. For biking, meet at 1:30pm at the Bierman Field Athletic Building (U of M, 516 15th Ave. SE, Minneapolis), theres street parking around the building. Well return before 6pm, then have pot luck dinner at Ellens home in Minneapolis (bring food, drinks, and favorite games). If you do not want to bike, join us for pot luck and cards/games after 6pm. A Pizza Making Party. In celebration of the passing of Minnesotas fifth season that being the Slush Season (maybe the slush will be all gone by then), we our hosting a pizza making party. You and others can have the opportunity to tailor make pizzas for all to eat. We ask that you bring a topping to share for the pizzas, a topping such as mushrooms or olives or sausage or cheese, a beverage of your choice for you to drink, and bring your appetite too. SkiingCross-Country and/or Downhill. Well be renting a house in Ramsay, Michigan. Many cross-country and downhill areas nearby. The Upper Pennisula of Michigan has more and later snowfall so there should be plenty of snow. Seven of use did this trip last year and had a great time. The house has everything we need to do our own cooking and enjoy evenings of games, movie, sauna, and conversation. Estimated cost: $80. Deposit: $25. Max trip size: 10.

Snowshoe Lodge Ski Trip. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, outdoor log sauna. They have traditional wood & leather snowshoes for you to use. Located south of Ely, always lots of snow. Rustic log cabin lodge accommodates 10, also available is a private log cabin if you prefer. Maybe Ron and Teddy will give is an orientation on snowshoes, local lore, etc. Lodge has wood heat, electricity, gas cook stove, great atmosphere. Many miles of XC ski and snowshoe trails. Enjoy the serenity and natural sauna at the end of the day. Stew supper Saturday night. Estimated cost: $68. Max trip size: 12.

Winter Camping. We will be entering on Clearwater Lake and camping on Little Caribou Lake (aprox. 5 miles) with one 210 rod and one 25 rod portage. Day trips to area lakes and streams using skis and snowshoes. Dinners will be provided, you will be responsible for everything else. Be prepared to be comfortable down to -20 F. Skiing In or Around Lutsen. Comfortable house rented from Solbakken Resort right on Lake Superior with fireplace, 3 bathrooms, kitchen. Lots of cross-country ski trails nearby along with snowshoeing and near downhill skiing at Lutsen. It is about 1 mile south of the main lodge which has a sauna and whirlpool available for our use. Trip cost is about $100 and we will plan meals together. Carpooling can be arranged too. Max trip size: 12.
