Thursday – Sunday, December 30 – January 2      SORRY, THIS TRIP IS FULL, WAIT LIST OPEN
Skiing at ABR over New Year's Weekend. ABR, near Ironwood, MI, has over 60k of ski trails across 1,100 acres of varied terrain. We have rented Ski Haus #10 — which is about a 10-minute drive to the ABR trails. The U.P. gets much more snow, and sooner, than we do, so we are virtually guaranteed great ski conditions. Two-day ABR ski pass cost is included in the trip cost, and there are many other options for skiing, both cross-country and downhill. Estimated cost: $150+gas. Deposit: $150. Max trip size: 10-12.

Saturday, October 16     DAY TRIP
Sandhill Crane Viewing — Crex Meadows, Grantsburg, Wisconsin. This popular trip returns after a one year hiatus. Experience the distinct call of a sandhill crane — once heard it will not be forgotten. Join us for a day trip to Crex Meadows, one of the premier wildlife viewing places in Wisconsin, located about 75 miles north of the Twin Cities. As always, Rover membership not required for day trips. Peak numbers of sandhill cranes and trumpeter and tundra swans are present this time of the year and the birds are migrating — we never know what we'll see.

At 30,000 acres Crex is the largest state owned wildlife area in Wisconsin and is home to 270 species of birds and 600 species of plants. The rare sedge marsh and brush prairie habitats make the area a utopia for wildlife. The extensive road system offers excellent access and great vantage points for wildlife viewing. The trip coordinator has first-hand knowledge of the road system and the best wildlife viewing areas. There will also be an option to hike along the St. Croix river for a few miles during the middle of the day. Bring snacks, a bag lunch, binoculars, hiking boots, and water. We'll stop for dinner on the way back. Meet at REI Roseville for carpooling at 5:30 a.m., returning 8:00 p.m. Max trip size: 12–15. Estimated cost: $10 for gas + dinner. Max trip size: 12-15 (reservation required).

Backpacking on the Border Route Trail. Backpack this beautiful and challenging BWCA trail that we've been maintaining for years! If we're lucky, we'll see some good fall colors. Backpack 5 1/2 miles through one of the most scenic sections of this trail. Go in the Daniels Lake Acess Trail to Rose Lake and go the South Lake Trail. Deposit: $75. Max trip size: 9.

Thursday – Sunday, September 16 – 19
Border Route Trail Recon & Maintenance. We welcome you to join us for a weekend on the Pigeon River Cliffs section of the Border Route Trail. This will be an excellent chance to visit some of the best easily accessible sections of the Midwest’s premiere hiking trail with its combination of old and second growth pine forest and multiple overlooks with spectacular views out over the Royal and Pigeon River valleys and North and South Fowl Lakes. We guarantee that you’ll be impressed.

We'll depart from REI-Roseville Thursday after work and aim for a 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday evening return time. The plan is to car camp at the Otter Lake Trailhead camp site and split into 2 groups on Friday in order to do a reconnaissance hike of both the Royal and Pigeon River Ridges. On Saturday and Sunday we'll then take care of any problem areas that we ran into plus spend some time scouting for potential campsite locations along the Pigeon River and Portage Brook.

Keep in mind that on summer trips there is a certain obligation to test the waters of Otter Lake, the Pigeon River, and maybe even the little lake up from the Otter Lake Junction even if it does involve a bit of bushwhacking.

We will bring along two chain saws, two brushcutters, and a few hand limbers in order to be prepared to actually do enough genuine work to avoid feeling guilty. Specific plans include clearing and properly marking the trail treadway through three fairly small patches cut during a recent timber sale — a pretty straight forward job. I also would like to do a minor realignment of a roughly two block section that was hit by the 7/4/99 Big Blow.

Some camping experience is helpful but not essential. You should be in good enough condition to hike 5 to 8 miles per day over relatively rugged terrain. Estimated cost: $55. Deposit: $55. Max trip size: 12.

Sponsoring organization: Border Route Trail Association & Border Route Trail Meetup Group

Wednesday, September 15     DAY TRIP
Wednesday Night Hike — Special Edition! Hike at Lilydale Regional Park. Please note that this hike starts promptly at 6:00 p.m. St. Paul Parks and Recreation has invited the Rovers to particpate in the pilot year of Hike It!, a new interpretive hike program at Lilydale Regional Park. They have specifically requested our participation to help them kick the program off by offering Rovers the first opportunity to participate in these hikes.

Hike It! program overview: Did you know that Lilydale Regional Park was once a bustling town along the Mississippi River? Today, nature has reclaimed this beautiful park that boasts oak woodlands, floodplain forests and prairies, and a fascinating human and natural history. Volunteer interpreters will bring the park’s unique past to life on a one-hour hike from the river bottom up to Bruce Vento Overlook. Sunday, September 12     DAY TRIP
Paddle the Gorge. This paddling adventure is located right in our own backyard. The Mississippi River is the longest river in the U.S. and its character changes more as it flows thru the Twin Cities than in any other area, so unique that it is designated a National River and Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service.

Although this is not a difficult paddle, it is NOT a beginners trip. According to the DNR, this segment of the Mississippi requires some paddling skills in order to avoid snags, sweepers, and boulders, large wakes from boats and barges and because the current can be deceptively swift.

You are responsible to find your own paddling partner, if needed, and to transport your own boat. Please check with the Rovers' cage coordinators for availability of canoes and kayaks. We'll meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Fort Snelling State Park boat launch on the Minnesota River, paddling around Pike Island, and then head upstream on the Mississippi, lock thru Lock and Dam #1 at the Ford Bridge and continue for about 1 hour before turning back. We'll stop for a late lunch after the paddle.

Directions to Fort Snelling State Park: From Hwy 5 by the airport, take the Post Road exit and enter the park at the stone gate. Follow the main road approx. 2 miles. Follow the signs to the boat launch. A yearly ($25) or daily ($5) Minnesota State Park pass is required for entry.

Wednesday, August 18     WEDNESDAY NIGHT HIKE
Hiking the Snail Trail. Join us on a suburban hike along a wooded trail near Snail Lake in Shoreview. Last year there was a Wednesday night hike in this park but that was a different well-traveled trail. A portion of this hike will be off the usual path taken and covers ground similar to a north woods logging trail. There are a couple hills but anyone in fair shape will find it easy going. The off the beaten part will only be a portion of the hike as it is not long and then we will revert to the regular trail.

The park's extensive areas of oak woods, wetlands and grasslands provide habitat for many species of wildlife, including deer, fox, heron, egrets, and waterfowl. There are a couple miles of hiking trails.

Meet at the Snail Lake parking lot. From I-694 take the Victoria Street exit which is a short distance East of the Lexington Avenue exit. Go north 2 stop signs to Snail Lake Blvd., turn right and follow the road to the park entrance on the left. Enter the lot and when you approach the concession building turn to the left to park.

We will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. and hike approximately 1 hour or until dusk. For anyone wanting a longer hike bring a light. We hike rain or shine; bring rain gear, if necessary, and bug spray. Dogs are allowed on leashes. Kids welcome. Rover membership is not necessary for day trips. Guests are welcome, so bring a friend!

Snail Lake has a nice approach to the clean water and is just steps away from the parking lot for those who would like to take a dip afterwards. There is also a Dairy Queen in the vicinity that has a large indoor and outdoor seating area for socializing.

We will hike a 42- mile section of the North Country National Scenic Trail along Lake Superior, stretching from Munising to Grand Marais. We’ll depart Sunday and begin backpacking Monday AM, spending the next 4 nights at backcountry campsites for which I have reservations. We’ll get off the trail Friday, and spend Saturday as a layover day for exploring the area or just relaxing, returning on Sunday. Some experience is required because of the distance and because we’ll have two 10+ mile days with full packs. We must share tents on the trail as park rules require a maximum of 2 tents per site. We’ll have a planning meeting to discuss trip logistics and details. Estimated cost: $25 for back country fees + gas + 3 nights car camping + food + any meals eateni out. Deposit: $25. Max trip size: 4.

Hiking-Kayak Trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Leaving Thursday morning with carpooling in St. Paul, returning Monday. On Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., one-day guided kayaking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore with our guide from Northern Water Adventures. The group rate is $120 for the day of kayaking. All equipment plus wet suits will be provided with instruction, but no lunch. Single and double kayaks will be available. If waves are too big at Pictured Rocks, which rarely happens, then we will go to the more sheltered Grand Island which also has sea caves and beautiful settings. There is no refund from Northern Water Adventures. On the drive to the Pictured Rocks, we’ll stop for one day of hiking at Porcupine Mountain State Park on the Escarpment Trail from where we can see Lake of the Clouds. Aside from a wish for clear sailing, hopefully we will have no clouds on the trip since there are two celestial events to watch, one being the Perseids meteor shower, the other is the Paulding Light. The Paulding Light however doesn’t require getting up in the middle of the night. There will be other shared costs for camping sites and cars/gas that are yet to be determined. More details will be following as the trip date approaches. Lunch/dinner will be at restaurants or you can bring your own food. Max trip size is 8. Estimated cost: $170. Deposit: $120. Checks are to be made out to Jim Hoeppner, 50% deposit ($60) due May 15, with other 50% due June 15. Max trip size: 8.

Thursday – Sunday, August 12 – 15
Day Hiking on the Border Route Trail. We welcome you to join us for a 3-day weekend of day hiking on the Border Route and further trail layout on the Moss Lake Ridge Trail which is now under development. We’ll depart from the Roseville REI at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, stop at Sir Benedict’s in Duluth, and continue up the North Shore to Grand Marais where we’ll head up the Gunflint Trail to our slightly developed but still primitive campsite on the Cross River upstream from Gunflint Lake.

On Friday we plan on doing a 10.5 mi. day hike and trail condition reconnaissance on the BRT from the South Lake Trail westward to the Crab Lake Cutoff. We’ll hike in on the South Lake Trail, built by the CCC in the 1930s and a marvel in trail layout. When we hit the BRT, we’ll head west past Sock and Topper Lakes to the Crab Lake Cutoff at which point we’ll take a left and head back to the Gunflint via the Cutoff and the Crab Lake Maintenance Access Trail. You can expect to see some good overlooks towards South, North, and Gunflint Lakes plus in the Crab Lake area you’ll get to experience the re-growth following the Ham Lake Burn of two years ago. With luck the raspberries and/or blueberries will still be out.

On Saturday we’ll hike in on the South Lake Trail and split into two groups, one to do maintenance on the South Lake Trail and the other to head east on the Birch / Moss Portage to continue the layout on the western end of the Moss Ridge Trail. When completed the Moss Ridge Trail will form part of a 12.5 mile loop route which will incorporate some of the most spectacular concentration of overlooks in the Upper Midwest. It’ll be well worth the effort.

On Sunday we’ll pack up camp in the morning and head over to the Caribou Rock Trail where we’ll once again split into two groups, one to do some day hiking on the Caribou Rock Trail and the other to continue with the refinement of layout on the Moss Lake Ridge Trail. We aim to get on the road by 3:00 p.m., stop for fast food in Duluth, and be back in the Twin Cities by 9:00 p.m. Estimated cost: $55. Deposit: $55. Max trip size: 10.

Upper St. Croix Day Paddle. We are planning a full day trip, exploring a different section of the St. Croix. The put in place is at the boat access at the HWY 70 bridge on the Minnesota side. Hopefully the weather will be nice and there will be an opportunity to swim, etc. We will meet at 8:15 a.m. at REI Roseville to carpool, hopefully reduce the number of cars, and caravan to the put in. Carpool will leave by 8:30 a.m. This is meant to be a full-day trip, with no set time for getting off the river. We will probably stop somewhere for a meal on the way home, not yet decided where. Let us know if you will be joining, so that we can send more trip information via e-mail. Please include your name, cell phone (for day of trip), type of boat, paddling partner if applicable.

Paddling and Camping the Namekagon River. The Namekagon River is a clear, spring-fed river that is part of the National Scenic Riverway maintained by the National Park System. Enjoy some of the clearest water around while swimming, paddling, floating, snorkeling, and just enjoying the cool water on a hot summer weekend. We will paddle the lower section below Trego, WI, approximately 20-25 miles, with camping on the river Saturday night. Both canoes and kayaks are welcome and will be available from the Rover cage for this trip. Beginners are welcome and two spots will be held until July 9 for newer Rovers who have joined within the past year. We will meet near Trego (place TBD) to camp Friday evening and start canoeing Saturday morning. Meals will be group meals and the cost split among the group. Deposit: $15. Max trip size: 8.

Thursday – Sunday, July 22 – 25
Recon Hike on the Border Route Trail.

We may even find ripe raspberries in need of picking.

We will bring along two chain saws, two brushcutters, and a few hand limbers in order to be prepared to actually do enough genuine work to avoid feeling guilty. Specific plans include clearing and properly marking the trail treadway through three fairly small patches cut during a recent timber sale — a pretty straight-forward job. I also would like to do a minor realignment of a roughly two block section that was hit by the 7/4/99 Big Blow.

The trip cost of $55 will cover transportation plus food from Friday breakfast through Sunday lunch. Food in Duluth or Two Harbors on the way up and back will be on your own. Estimated cost: $55. Deposit: $55. Max trip size: 12.

Tuesday – Sunday, July 20 – 25
Backpacking Isle Royale. Isle Royale — it's lush, it's green, it's beautiful, it has water, and moose, and is only accessible by boat or seaplane (...if you're a human)

So you want to go! Now what? This is not a beginner's trip, and will not be given beginner type instruction. You must be able to pack and get all your gear ready, plus be able to actually do the hike. Plan to bring and carry everything you will need (including food). We'd like to pair folks up for tenting, and use some community items (like stoves, water pumps), and think in terms of being self-contained.

The trip looks like this:

  • Day 1: Leave TC in early afternoon and get up and stay at Grand Portage (tip of MN)
  • Day 2: Depart 7:30 am on Ferry, arrive at 1:30 pm at McCargoe Cove, hike 6.6 miles to Todd Harbor.
  • Day 3: Hike to Hatchet Lake - 3.8 miles
  • Day 4: Hike to Lake Desor South - 8.1
  • Day 5: Hike to Island Mine - 5.5
  • Day 6: Hike to Windigo - Early AM: 6.9 mile hike, Get on ferry noon, return to Grand Portage 3 pm -- head back to TC (5 hour drive) (Or can combine Day 5 & 6 hike would be 11.6 miles (combining the Day 5 & 6 hikes...it's just longer if you have to take a jog over and camp at Island Mine.)

As a group we'll have conversations about whether we want to do group food, which group gear we'll bring, finalizing the route, carpooling, etc. There are a limited number of spots on the ferry to McCargoe Cove. I will book the ferry tickets Weds., June 30th. That doesn't mean the trip is closed at that point, just that you'd need to book your own ferry and hope for availability. Estimated cost: $210 + Food + Gas. Deposit — if I'm booking your ferry: $160; if I'm not booking your ferry: $20.Max trip size: 6.

Paddling and Camping the Namekagon River. We will paddle 34 miles from County K Landing in Trego to Riverside Landing on the Namekagon River in WI. The Namekagon River has limited development visible from the river, is a fantastic river for viewing and photographing wildlife, and has great primitive campsites. The river is incredibly clear and deep with many swimming holes and a fun current for floating. Observe an intact muscle population and perhaps get a glimpse of the rare and ancient sturgeon. See the root structures of plants along the bank, changing sand and stone patterns along the river bottom, and fish swimming up to you while snorkeling. Regardless of how you enjoy your time on the water, you are almost guaranteed to have eagles dragonflies leading the way. Two spots will be reserved for newer Rovers. Estimated cost: shared food and gas. Max trip size: 8.

Friday – Monday, February 12 – 15     SORRY, THIS TRIP IS FULL, WAIT LIST OPEN
Cross-Country Ski & Snowshoe. We have rustic cabins at Tettegouche State Park for Presidents Day Weekend and Valentines Day - two cabins, a total of 12 people. Leave Friday Morning, return Monday evening. You can read about Tettegouche Camp (click on link, see page 2): It's really a cool place! Old wood cabins, propane heated to 40 degrees, wood stove to bring up temp to comfy level. Cook stove, but no running water — yet, there is a heated shower/toilet building on the property. There is also a log building "lodge" used for common space/gathering. The hike in is a hilly one and one-half mile hike. Depending on snow conditions — you can ski in, snowshoe in, or usually hike on packed snow. We will haul in gear in backpacks and small sleds. Ski trails are not for beginners. The cabins are right on the ski trail. There is great x-country skiing up there-and/or great snowshoeing! My FIRST PRIORITY will be for people WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE. Exceptions will be made for 1) two people who are willing to take care of menu planning and shopping and 2) drivers. Looking for 4 more non-snoring people, and 6 people who can sleep in a room with people who might snore. Meet at REI — Roseville at 8:00 a.m., returning 6:00 p.m. Estimated cost: $150, including transportation. Deposit: $75. Max trip size: 12.
