Programs Archive—2007


  • December 18: Backpacking in the Beartooth Mountains. Weeklong backpacking trip in Montana's Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness from July 2007. Presented by Terry Kochaver and Chris Fothergill.
  • December 11: The North Country Trail. Presented by John Leinen, past President of the North Country Trail Association's Board of Directors and long-time NCTA volunteer. John will provide an update on the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST). The NCNST, America's longest hiking trail and Minnesota's only National Scenic Trail, is actively being constructed here in Minnesota and also in northwestern Wisconsin. The goal of the North Country Trail Association is to complete a premier 4,600-mile long hiking trail like the Appalachian Trail that spans from New York to North Dakota. Come and learn more about the NCNST, some current projects, and how you can get involved in building a recreational legacy for current and future generations.
  • November 27: My Summer Banding Birds in W. Virginia and Maryland. Bird research in West Virginia and Maryland. If you like birds and the outdoors, come to my presentation and I will share my experience as a biologist trying to catch and band birds. I will go through the process of setting up nets before dawn, how to take birds out of the nets, and how to age them. I will also show some great birds that were caught from eastern screech owls to pileated woodpeckers. Presented By Sarah Buman
  • November 20: The Great Northwest: Hiking the Cascades, Northern Washington, Northern Oregon, and the Columbia Gorge. Presented by Jim Hoeppner and Anne Westgard.
  • November 13: Mt. Rainer. Successful guided climb up the difficult Kautz route of Mt Rainer which is a 14,000 ft peak in Washington state. The climb included 5 pitches of 50–90 degree ice climbing, a short section of 5.7 of mixed rock and ice climbing, rappeling through 4 pitches of snow fins (similar to ice serracs), glacier crevasses, typical glacier and snow hiking with ice axes and ropes and just an all around good time. Presented by Cheryl Batson and Tom Harris.
  • November 6: Talk About Training and Gear Needed for a Mount Rainier Guided Summit Climb. We will talk about the training we did: what worked, what didn't, and what we wished we had done. We will also have the gear that we used on the climb to give you an idea what was carried. There will be a slide show of the climb on Nov 13 (see below). Presented by Tom Harris and Cheryl Batson.
  • October 30: Biking in Northern Italy During the 2007 Giro d'Italia: Biking in the Italian Alps and Dolomites, and watching the pros cover the same climbs during the 2007 Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy). Presented By Sussie Hartigan.
  • October 16: Summiting Seven 14,000 ft Peaks in Nine Days. The adventure includes the scenic Mt of the Holy Cross and our "rest day" of 13,200 ft Notch Mt. Most of the mountains are class 2 approaches but Mt Missouri includes a small section of exposed class 3 and 4. Presented by Tom Harris and Cheryl Batson.
  • October 9: Vacation Ideas. Want to go on a Sunny beach vacation? Not sure where to go? Where to find the good deals? Where is the best snorkeling? Where the best Mexico beaches are at, and those after the hurricane? What would be more Roveresque, less touristy? I work for a vacation package company, MLT Vacations. I will provide some helpful tips I have learned in the industry that could help you shop for a vacation, and find the best place to go for your ideal activities. If you've never been to Mexico, the Caribbean, or Hawaii and need guidance on where to go, I hope I can help. (Not a sales pitch) Presented By Kathy Litt.
  • October 2: Bicycle Touring. A Trip taken by two Rovers this last summer from Seattle to San Francisco. Presented by David Byrne and Julie Retka.
  • September 25: Fall Intro Show. Featuring a digital slide show set to music and club representatives available to answer questions about the club. This is a great way to find out more about Minnesota Rovers, all the activities, and the people. Held at the Bloomington REI. Check the Special Events page for more details.
  • September 18: Road Trip. An automobile road trip taken through central U.S. routes less traveled. Slides from Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Hills, Canyonlands, Bryce and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Presented by Walt Johnson.
  • September 11: Backpacking in the Sierras. A Rovers trip from August 2006 consisting of a little used trans-Sierra route. Starting on the Fresno side at Cedar Grove and exiting near South Lake on the Bishop side via Granite Basin, Granite Pass, States Lakes, Simpson Meadow, Middle Forks Kings River, Susy Basin and Bishop Pass. Presented by Barb & John Taylor.
  • September 4: Nepal-India. A one-month trip taken this past May to Everest Base Camp. It includes Buddist and Hindu Temples, some cultural dances, the local people, and hiking up a 19,000 foot mountain in addition to a 50% grade hike up 17,000 Chola Pass. The route goes through Gokyo Lake which is considered one of the most scenic routes to take in the Himalayas. One day was spent in India touring Old and New Delhi and various 16th century temples and burial sites of the Mongolas and the Red Fort. This is a 40 minute slideshow presented by Cheryl Batson.
  • June 5: Water Treatment in the Backcountry. Learn about the latest products available for making water drinkable from REI. Presented by Chris Fothergill.
  • May 29: Camping with Kids. Outdoor adventures for kids and families. Tips on where to go, how to plan, what to bring to make your trip or activity fun for all. Presented by Cari Gelle.
  • May 8: Ultra Running. Learn about some of the many aspects of ultra running (runs greater than marathon distance) from an ultra runner. Presented by Jim Wilson.
  • May 1: Presentation on Trail Clearing.
  • April 17: Out West Trip. In July 2006, six Rovers went exploring the mountains around Wyoming, Montana, Bighorns, and Galitan. Presented by Norm Smythe and Cari Gelle.
  • April 10: Traveling through Costa Rica. Fall of 2006. Presented By Michelle West and Chris Lenhart
  • April 3: Israel-Egypt-Jordan. See an overview of historical and archaeological areas of Israel important to Jewish and Christian history. This includes Massada, the Via Dolorosa, the Western Wall, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem. Cheryl also got some exposure to Israeli culture by staying in a Kibbutz and took a visit to the Dead Sea. Presented by Cheryl Batson.
  • March 27: Sailing in the Greek Isles. and some touring in northern Greece and Athens in the summer of 2005. Presented by Barb Senty.
  • March 20: Film—The Collective. Collaborative efforts of some of the world's best mountain bikers. Presented by Bob Nemi.
  • March 13: Egypt-Jordan. Cheryl recently visited Jordon to view the city carved in stone called Petra which was on an ancient trade route and then go to Egypt to go up Mt. Sinai, then took a trip down the Nile by boat, and saw some of the major pyramids in the area. Presented by Cheryl Batson.
  • March 6: Biking in Northern Italy during the 2006 Giro d’Italia. Biking in the Italian Alps, the lake country, and the Dolomites during the 2006 Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy) bike race. Presented By Susan Hartigan.
  • February 27: Video Clips. Presented by John Borgfelt
  • February 20: Backpacking in the Frank Church Wilderness Area. Terry Kochaver will show pictures from his July 2006 backpacking trip.
  • February 13: On Safari in Tazania. Tour of several game parks from March 2006. Presented by Barb and John Taylor.
  • February 6: Sedona and Canyon De Chelly. Joanie's personal journey in September 2004, hiking the red rock country of Sedona, Arizona and further excursion to Canyon De Chelly. Beautiful, vivid photos taken after a heavy rain storm. Presented by Joanie Johnson.
  • January 30: Hiking and Horseback Riding in Sisseton, SD. Rolling prairies, beautiful skies, friendly people, and—forested hills, creeks and ravines? Yes, there is such a place. Join us as we share our experiences on this revival of a formerly annual Rover trip—to this beautiful countryside “right next door.” Presented by Norm Smythe and Deb Gagner.
  • January 23: Staying Warm While Winter Camping. Learn about staying warm with the right camping gear. For those who are interested (or curious)in getting out and exploring the winter wonderland around us. Presented by Tom Harris
  • January 16: Tour of Mont Blanc. A ten-day trek circumnavigating Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak. This is the most popular long hike in Europe. Starting in Chamonix, France, the “Mountaineering Capitol of the World,” the hike goes through Italy and Switzerland before returning to France. Presented By Susan Hartigan.
  • January 9: Leave No Trace. Hear about what's behind the LNT philosophy, why it's important, and see what we can do to help preserve the outdoors for everyone's enjoyment. Presented by Don Begalle, From REI Outreach & Events.
